VILLAGE BOARD TO RESOLVE TIE VOTE

The Village Board, not the mayor, will resolve a tie vote for a new village trustee.

After a count of absentee ballots Tuesday showed Republican Pamela Piazza and Democrat Clifton Darling each with 185 votes, Terry Niebel, a Chautauqua County election commissioner, said Mayor Richard E. Slagle would appoint a trustee to fill the one-year trustee vacancy.

But Wednesday, Niebel said that after consulting with Village Attorney Kenneth M. Lasker and the state Board of Elections, it was determined the Village Board would determine, by lot, "which candidate shall be elected." The decision could come Monday night during the the board's reorganizational meeting.
