Insurance carriers for William Hein Co., a Buffalo law book publisher, have agreed to pay truck driver Melvin Williams $500,000 for the career-ending neck injuries he suffered Sept. 21, 1992, when hit by one of the company's trucks, his lawyers said Wednesday.

Kevin J. Sullivan and Terrence D. McKelvey said the settlement was reached after seven days of testimony in a jury trial before State Supreme Court Justice Peter J. Notaro.

Williams, 44, a Buffalo resident, was driving his car north on Masten Avenue near Northampton Street late in the morning when a Hein truck rammed his car, Sullivan and McKelvey said. Williams, who had been a tractor-trailer driver, can no longer work because of disk and neck injuries suffered in the crash, his attorneys said.
