Buffalo-based Tops Markets Inc. has broken ground on its second Erie, Pa., super center.
The 77,000-square-foot store is located at 1520 W. 26th St. (Route 20) in Erie.
Tops' first Erie store, another 77,000-square-foot facility at 38th and Stanton streets, currently is under construction and slated for a June opening. Project cost for each store is pegged at $14 million.
The Route 20 store will feature several specialty departments, including Captain's Choice Seafood, a specialty cheese shop, a self-service Baker's Oven bakery and a full-service meat department.
Mellon Bank Corp. has agreed to maintain a full-service bank branch in the store, with extended banking and Saturday hours.
When the second Erie store opens for business in about one year, it will mark the third foray by Tops outside New York State. The two northwest Pennsylvania stores join a long-time Tops location in Bradford.
A fourth Pennsylvania store, located southeast of Elmira in Athens, also is slated for construction.
