Jack Jurek of Lackawanna, who won last week's Professional Bowlers Association tournament, averaged 239 in the second round and moved up from 44th to 13th place Wednesday in the $180,000 SplitFire Spark Plug Open at Eastway Lanes.
Jurek totaled 2,794 for 12 games over two rounds for an overall average of 233.
Steve Jaros averaged 240 in each of the first two rounds in building a 6-pin lead. Jaros had 2,880 pins in holding off Bill Oakes who moved into second place from ninth.
Tied for third were part-time pro Dave Dobrzykowski and first-round leader Marty Letscher with 2,866.
Brian Voss moved into fifth place with 2,851 with the help of a 300 game in round two.
Defending champion Dennis Horan of San Diego was 72nd with 2,598 pins.
Kelly Coffman and David Husted also had 300 games in the second round.
First place in Saturday's televised finals from the Erie Civic Center is worth $39,000.
The last six games of qualifying are today, with the top 24 advancing to match play tonight and Friday. The top five play for the title on Saturday.
