One of the things Evan Krug, 8, of Angola likes best is to walk in the woods that surround his house and to fish in a nearby creek.
So it was completely natural for him to write a poem called "Seeds From My Forest" as an entry in the Cricket League international writing contest, where youngsters were invited to write a poem about a "most important treasure."
Evan's entry, printed in the April issue of Cricket, the children's magazine, was one of two first-prize winners in the 10-and-under category. He received a hardcover book and a certificate as a prize.
"I think Evan is pleased about the award," said his father. "But he's a little taken back by the attention."
Evan, son of Lawrence E. and Marcia Krug, is a second-grader at Southtowns Catholic School in Lakeview and attends Discovery Schoolhouse in Lakeview before and after school. At Discovery, students are encouraged to submit art, fiction and poetry to Cricket and other places.
Previously Evan and others in Discovery's Earth Saver's Club wrote to President Clinton and other officials to protest the felling of trees when Pleasant Avenue was widened, his father said.
