Radio Shack said today it plans to add 500 stores over the next five years, the chain's first major expansion in nearly a decade.
That would give the company, the flagship unit of Tandy Corp. and the nation's largest electronics retailer, 7,000 stores by the year 2000.
Radio Shack said it hopes to open about 100 new stores in each of the next five years, as long as market conditions warrant.
"The store expansion program is an important element in our overall plan for Radio Shack," said President Leonard Roberts. "It symbolizes our confidence in the stability and long-term growth potential of Radio Shack."
