PINE TREE SAP LINKED TO AIR POLLUTION

Remember when President Ronald Reagan claimed trees cause air pollution? University of Florida researchers now say he was right, at least in part.

A study of terpenes, a component of the gooey resin in pine tree sap, found they actually contribute to pollution, according to Eric Allen, an environmental sciences professor.

Although Reagan's remarks drew hoots of scorn, Allen said pine trees aggravate the global ozone problem by emitting eight types of terpenes that react with sunlight and pollutants to produce ozone, which is a form of air pollution at lower altitudes.
