The City Council has authorized the city to apply for a $150,000 grant to hire two more police officers under the federal crime bill.
The Council voted 11 to 1 Monday night to seek the grant, which would pay 75 percent of the cost of hiring the two officers for three years. Council President William Gullotti opposed the measure.
The Council also approved budget adjustments closing the 1994 budget with a $285,000 surplus, with $22,000 of it going to balance the books for 1993.
Councilman Charles Nazzaro, Finance Committee chairman, suggested the city establish a substantial fund balance, noting Chautauqua County has a fund balance topping $2 million.
