A small section of the Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt -- the whole thing would cover 16 football fields -- is coming to Buffalo this weekend.

Canisius College will be host for the first Western New York display of the quilt, which commemorates those who have died from AIDS across the country.

Some 600 panels, or 2 percent of the entire quilt, will be on display in the Koessler Athletic Center from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Closing ceremonies will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday.

Proceeds from the display will benefit Benedict House and AIDS Family Services.

While the memorial quilt seeks to illustrate the enormity of the AIDS epidemic nationwide, AIDS Community Services of Western New York sponsors the local Mending of the Hearts Memorial Project. Families, friends and volunteers gather each year to construct memorial panels in honor of those who have died from AIDS.
