An American couple on an academic exchange program have been killed in their apartment in the Russian Far East.
Police in Khabarovsk said the bodies of Lee Chu Kwan, 60, and his wife, Lee Kee Vol, 59, were discovered Tuesday night in Khabarovsk, 200 miles from the Sea of Japan.
A U.S. Embassy spokesman in Moscow confirmed the killing today but would not provide hometowns or further information.
Police said the man had been strangled and the woman died of head injuries. Investigators found $20,000 in the couple's apartment.
The couple had come to Khabarovsk for an academic exchange, and had been working at the Khabarovsk Medical Institute since the summer of 1993.
