NEW WATER DISTRICT BACKED IN NEWSTEAD

Newstead councilman Thomas L. Cowan, the Town Board water liaison, said 65 percent of property owners in the southeast end of town who responded to a survey support a new water district.

The plan is to extend proposed District 9 in the Buckwheat Road area adjacent to the Town of Alden to Main Street and include South Newstead and Crittenden roads.

Cowan said residents within the proposed district were polled and 142 said they were in favor of the project, 66 were not, and 12 were undecided. He said a proposal will be prepared and presented to the Town Board for future review.

Town Attorney Nathan S. Neill Monday said approval for the plan would be needed from the state Department of Audit and Control. He explained that once a formal map, plan and report for the area are prepared, the Town Board will set a date for a public hearing.
