Canadian Fisheries Minister Brian Tobin said Monday the Spanish fishing fleet was "continuing to fish out of control," threatening to destroy what little remained of stocks off Canada's Atlantic coast.
European Union Fisheries Commissioner Emma Bonino charged in return that "One of our main partners . . . feels free not to abide any more by the rules of the Law of the Sea as soon as he considers that the international law in force is not securing his own interests."
Both speakers were addressing the fifth round of a U.N. conference aimed at protecting fish stocks.
In Brussels, Belgium, the European Commission announced Monday that the EU had suspended fisheries negotiations with Canada until it stops harassing EU fishing vessels.
