PIPELINE LAND TRANSFER FINALIZED IN GRAND ISLAND

The Town of Grand Island now owns 20 acres of Gun Creek Woodlands and will work with the Western New York Land Conservancy to keep it "forever wild," Supervisor James Pax said.

The closing was Friday.

Empire Pipeline purchased the plot, behind the WUTV facility on Whitehaven Road, for $56,000 from Donnette Hennigar and then deeded the land to the town. The purchase fulfilled Empire's legal duty to buy and preserve wetlands in order to make up for any lands disturbed by the natural gas pipeline constructed across the island. Mrs. Hennigar had sold the timber rights to the land to a logger, who was reimbursed as part of the Empire deal.
