FENCE ALONG CREEK TO AID WILDLIFE

The Nature Conservancy and the U.S. Wildlife Service have combined on a Partners in Wildlife project, erecting a 4,900-foot fence along French Creek on the MereFam Farm, owned by the Mike Meredith family, between the Southern Tier Expressway and Slab City.

The fence will limit cattle grazing to specific areas along the creek bank. The reduced grazing area will allow vegetation to grow, improving habitat for the creek's fish and mussels.

French Creek and its tributaries provide habitat for 66 species of fish and 25 species of mussels. Several are considered rare.
