Gerald S. DePasquale, a veteran of 28 years in Lackawanna politics, is coming out of retirement to run for mayor.

DePasquale, the retired city clerk, announced today that he will challenge incumbent Mayor Kathleen M. Staniszewski for the Democratic nomination.

"I think I've got a lot to offer; I know the city and I know the City Charter," DePasquale said.

He said he will run an issue-oriented campaign, targeting what he called charter violations by the mayor and appointments of unqualified people.

Richard J. Powers, a Republican, also has announced his candidacy.
