CHRYSLER MAY REPLACE MINIVAN DOOR LATCHES

The Chrysler Corp. soon may announce an offer to pay for replacing the controversial rear-door latches on up to 4 million of its older minivans, the Detroit Free Press has reported.

Chrysler would not comment on the report, which Saturday quoted unnamed sources as saying the plan has initial U.S. government support but may not be considered a formal safety recall.

Critics of the company's 1984-94 model minivans claim the single-stage latches are prone to failure in certain rear-end collisions, allowing the doors to pop open. Chrysler has maintained that the latches are safe.
