CANISIUS' CALL TO ARMS PAYS OFF BIG WITH A SWEEP

Canisius pitching was in control for all 14 innings as the Golden Griffins swept a non-conference double-header from Colgate at the Demske Sports Complex Sunday.

Bruce Axelson allowed two hits and struck out 10 over 6 2/3 innings as the Griffs took the opener, 3-2.

Canisius (5-3) took the nightcap, 8-0, with starter Tim Smith going the distance and also allowing just two hits while fanning 10.

Visiting St. Bonaventure handed Rutgers its first Atlantic 10 defeat, 13-6. Matt Burke's grand slam highlighted Bona's five-run third inning. The Bonnies are 8-10 overall, 4-2 in conference. Rutgers is 5-1 in the A-10.

Erie Community College opened in Fort Myers, Fla., with a 2-1 victory over Union County College of New Jersey. Right-hander Steve Packard threw six shutout innings for the Kats and Rob Vogtli got the save.

SOFTBALL: Canisius (7-6) improved to 4-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with a 5-0, 14-2 sweep of Iona in New Rochelle. Kristin Spak pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts in the opener. In the nightcap, winner Kristina Chavez yielded two hits over five innings.

Robert Morris swept visiting St. Bonaventure, 6-3 and 5-0. Bona's Kerry Dowd had two hits and an RBI in the opener.

Erie Community College opened its season by dropping both ends of a double-header in Orlando, Fla. ECC fell to Seminole Community College, 6-0, in the first game and was beaten, 7-2, by Monroe Community in the nightcap. Ellie Hanover (Depew) had two hits against Monroe.
