POPE ASKS CARDINAL O'CONNOR TO STAY ON AS N.Y. ARCHBISHOP

Pope John Paul II has asked Cardinal John O'Connor to stay on as archbishop of New York indefinitely, the New York Post reported Saturday.

Cardinal O'Connor got the good news in a fax from the Vatican, upon returning home on St. Patrick's Day from serving as the grand marshal of the parade, the Post said.

In January, when he turned 75, the cardinal wrote the pope a mandatory letter of resignation in accordance with church law.

In his fax, the pope invited Cardinal O'Connor to continue as archbishop "until other provision is made," according to the Post.
