Roswell Park Cancer Institute is seeking healthy males older than 55, particularly African-Americans, to participate in a seven-year study to test the effectiveness of the drug finasteride in preventing prostate cancer.
Eighteen thousand men at 222 sites throughout the United States are expected to participate in the study of the drug.
The drug was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1992 for use against benign hyperplasia, an enlargement of the prostate gland.
Researchers believe that finasteride may also prevent cancer. However, finasteride is not without risk. About 5 percent of men who take it complain of impotence and decreased libido.
