FORD HAS SURGERY FOR SHOULDER INJURY

This may explain his recent golf woes: Gerald R. Ford underwent surgery for a shoulder injury that probably goes back to his football career at the University of Michigan.

The shoulder hadn't bothered the former president until recently, spokeswoman Penny Circle said last week.

The elective surgery to repair a tear in the rotator cuff of Ford's left shoulder took about an hour.

"The doctor said it went extremely well," Ms. Circle said.
