A coroner's inquest into the death of a 4-month-old boy is expected to be completed sometime next week, Orleans County Sheriff David M. Green said Friday.
Fifteen persons testified Thursday at the start of the inquest about the circumstances surrounding the Feb. 24 death of Harry Joseph Hermey, and Sheriff's Department investigators plan to obtain written statements on Monday or Tuesday from seven other witnesses.
"Once we have those statements, the district attorney, coroner and my office will determine whether charges will be placed and if they are, what the charges should be," Green said.
An autopsy performed by the Monroe County medical examiner's office determined the baby died of sudden infant death syndrome. An investigation into the infant's death was launched after authorities said they found the baby's body on a mattress on the floor in a room with a broken window and dirty conditions in the house at 1754 Park Ave., Waterport, according to Green.
