Knight-Ridder Inc. elected President P. Anthony Ridder to the additional post of chief executive officer, succeeding James Batten who, undergoing treatments after surgery for brain cancer, remains chairman.

Kmart Corp. said it will break a 33-year tradition by opening its 2,316 domestic discount stores on Easter Sunday for the first time. The stores will be open regular Sunday hours, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Canandaigua Wine Co. has purchased the rights to several liquors owned by United Distillers Glenmore Inc. for $155 million: full rights to Fleischmann Skol, Mr. Boston, Canadian Ltd., Old Thompson, Kentucky Tavern, Chi Chi and di Amore spirits, and U.S. rights to Inver House, Glenmore, Schenley and El Toro brands.
