BERMUDA TO VOTE ON INDEPENDENCE

Bermuda residents will vote this summer on whether Britain's oldest colony should become independent, thus severing 375 years of colonial ties.

"I've never felt someone else should be responsible for me and my behavior," Deputy Premier Irving Pearman said Friday night after five days of debate on an independence referendum in the House of Assembly.

The assembly passed the Independence Referendum Act by a 20-18 vote.
