Glenn R. Cooke, executive director of the Genesee County Industrial Development Agency, said Friday he would spearhead an effort to get federal officials to locate a $20 million 250-bed federal detention center here.

Cooke said Batavia and Albion are the final two choices for the detention center, which he said involves as many as 300 new jobs and would have a major economic impact if the Town of Batavia site off Route 98 north of the Thruway is chosen. Four informational meetings will be held, and a decision on the location is expected by the end of this year.

The center, the first of its kind in the country, would house immigrants as well as inmates awaiting trial in Western New York federal courts or assignment to federal prisons.
