Three raccoons were killed by area police officers Thursday after they were reportedly acting ill or strange in the City of Lockport and in the towns of Pendleton and Hartland, police said Friday.
On Thursday afternoon, Niagara County sheriff's deputies destroyed a raccoon that appeared ill or injured at Oakwood Drive and Irish Road, Pendleton, and a raccoon in the front yard of Patricia Vincent on Humphrey Road, Hartland, deputies said.
Officer Warren Hale shot and killed a raccoon Thursday evening after Robert Kirchgraber of Akron Road, Lockport, reported the animal acting strangely in his yard. Hale said the animal was under a garbage can hissing when he arrived. He said he shot the animal after three exterminators told him they do not "do raccoons" and because the animal was on the route many children use to walk to nearby Roy B. Kelley School.
In an unrelated incident, people in the area of 6529 Slayton Settlement Road were warned that a gray fox has been chasing cars and exhibiting other odd behavior and were advised to shoot it and alert authorities.
