Two people were seriously injured Friday when they were struck by a car while crossing Portage Road at Main Street, Officer Les Kachurek said.
The man and woman started to cross the street toward the Niagara Falls Family Y when they were struck by a southbound car driven by Walter Sitek, 82, of Niagara Avenue, Kachurek said.
They were flipped up on the car's hood and windshield on impact, carried along for 67 feet and dropped to the roadway in the 1300 block of Portage Road, Kachurek said.
One of the pedestrians, John Scott, 52, of Fifth Street, was listed in serious but stable condition late Friday at Erie County Medical Center, where he is being treated for head and hip injuries, possible fractures and various lacerations, contusions and abrasions he suffered in the accident, Kachurek said.
The other pedestrian, Evelyn E. Pulvino, 76, also of Fifth Street, was listed in stable condition late Friday in Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, where she is being treated for head, hip and other injuries, a center official said.
Sitek said Scott and Ms. Pulvino stepped out in front of his car and he could not avoid hitting them, police said.
