The dollar was mixed today against other major currencies in European dealings, recovering against the Japanese yen but slipping against the German mark and the British pound.
Gold prices were mixed.
The dollar was trading at 88.45 Japanese yen in early dealings in London, up from 88.35 yen late Thursday.
In earlier trading in Tokyo, the dollar was quoted at 88.55 yen after dollar-buying by the Bank of Japan helped lift the currency from its low for the day of 88.08 yen.
The dollar slipped to 1.4059 German marks in early dealings in Europe, down from 1.4065 marks late Thursday. The dollar also was lower against the British pound, which was quoted at $1.6000, up from $1.5945 late Thursday.
