LOGGING INDUSTRY HAS NO PLACE IN ALLEGANY

A letter from a representative of the logging industry published March 18 attacks Tom Toles' Feb. 27 cartoon. The cartoon criticizes the business interests that are actively pushing for permission to cut down trees in Allegany State Park. The letter complains that the cartoon serves "no legitimate purpose."

While his "environmentally responsible forest products industry" certainly has a valued place in the New York State economy, it has no business depriving the citizens of New York of even one tree in Allegany State Park.

The park was set aside as a refuge for people and nature, not as an economic resource.

The Toles cartoon may have used satire to make a point, but the point is a valid one.
