A 4-year-old girl recovering at home from a routine tonsillectomy bled to death in her mother's arms four days after the surgery, the city medical examiner's office said Thursday.
Desiree Wade, who had surgery March 17 in St. Luke's Hospital, died in her Harlem home early Tuesday, the Daily News reported.
Beverly Wade took Desiree to the HIP Medical Center Saturday because she had a fever. A doctor prescribed an antibiotic. Tuesday morning, the child started gagging and spewing blood, Mrs. Wade told the News. Attempts to revive her at Harlem Hospital were unsuccessful.
A spokeswoman for the medical examiner's officer said an autopsy Wednesday showed death resulted from postoperative hemorrhaging following a tonsillectomy.
Dr. Daniel Kurloff, who did the surgery at St. Luke's could not be reached to comment.
