A mid-level managing director catapulted Wednesday to the top of Sony Corp., bypassing at least 11 senior associates to become president of the electronics and entertainment company.

Nobuyuki Idei was hand-picked by Norio Ohga, who is retiring as president after 13 years.

Ohga said he chose Idei because Sony needed a president who understood both electronics and entertainment. But Idei has had little experience in movies or music.
