Federal agents were ready to launch a drug raid on a public housing complex Wednesday, but called it off when they heard broadcast reports -- based on a city news release -- that detailed the raid.

The operation was to include agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Secret Service, the inspector general's office of the Department of Housing and Urban Development and other federal agencies.

But the project was canceled after it was included in a news release issued Tuesday night by the District of Columbia's Department of Public and Assisted Housing.
