MCI Communications Corp. and the Public Broadcasting Service today said they reached an agreement to provide PBS programming via MCI's on-line service and to develop CD-ROM-based new media services.

MCI, the nation's second-biggest long-distance telephone company, has committed a minimum of $15 million to the venture over the first five years, with the potential for a substantially greater investment, it said.

PBS said initial offerings will include expansion of PBS Online and development of an Internet service to integrate public television content into interactive formats.
