Buffalo Comptroller Joel A. Giambra will not seek the Democratic endorsement for county executive this year and will be a candidate for re-election as comptroller.
Giambra said that despite some initial discussions with Democratic leaders, he has decided not to pursue the post.
"I was encouraged by some polling results that showed significant support outside the City of Buffalo," he said. "I was encouraged and flattered, and hopefully I can take advantage of that somewhere down the road."
Giambra promised, however, that he would continue to "raise the discussion level" about combining many aspects of local governments and hoped for a similar discussion during the campaign.
"I hope whoever the Democratic candidate is," he said, "that we can talk about the need to develop a new approach to government."
Erie County Democrats are slated to interview County Executive Gorski, County Clerk David J. Swarts and Assemblyman Robin L. Schimminger about their interest in the post during a meeting Saturday.
