BIG AUDIENCE -- More than 55,000 fans are expected to be in New York's Shea Stadium at 1:30 p.m. Saturday when the Fredonia High School Mixed Chorus sings the national anthem at the New York Mets baseball game. The student chorus will sing several other numbers in the pregame show.
The 94 students, conductor Jack Sternisha and several adult chaperons began a tour in the New York City and Long Island area on Thursday and will return Sunday. Besides performing at Shea Stadium, they will sing in St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan and at Freeport High School on Long Island. . . .
GOING TO GERMANY -- Denice Godwin, 16-year-old junior at Kenmore West High School, has received a $2,500 scholarship from Youth For Understanding to spend the next school year with a German family. Denice, the daughter of Doyle and Linda Godwin of the Town of Tonawanda, will leave in midsummer, when she will be told which German city and which school she will attend.
A twin to Daniel Godwin, she applied for a congressional scholarship at the urging of her German teacher, Catherine Reimers. She is president of her school's German Club and has been taking German for four years. She also plays the flute and piccolo in the pit orchestra and is a member of the school's Community Club. She has a sister, Melissa, 18, a senior.
Denice said she will repeat her junior year in Germany and return to Kenmore West for her senior year. But the additional year in high school will be worth it, she confided. . . .
CRAFT SHOW -- The Mayor's Office for Senior Citizens will sponsor a spring craft show and sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday in the lobby of City Hall, according to a reminder from Cleta Nunn, director of the agency. She said many items will be on display and available for purchase as gifts for Mother's Day. . . .
