CHAUTAUQUA SEARCH FAILS TO RECOVER THIRD VICTIM

The Chautauqua County Sheriff's Department had a helicopter in the air and divers in the water Wednesday but turned up no trace of a third victim from Tuesday's drowning incident in Chautauqua Lake.

The bodies of William Cole, 50, and Carieta Horton, 68, of Linwood Avenue in Niagara Falls, washed ashore Tuesday off Belleview Road south of Bemus Point. An unidentified 65-year-old Niagara Falls man was reportedly fishing with the pair and likely also drowned.

Sheriff's Marine Patrol Sgt. James Merrill said the missing man's family reported he was with the couple, and another group saw them together in a 12-foot fishing boat that may have been too small to hold all three.

The Sheriff's Department said Cole and Ms. Horton could not swim and relatives said they were not wearing life jackets. The third man was a swimmer, but deputies fear he also drowned in the lake's cold water.
