NIAGARA WHEATFIELD BOYS CASH IN, 5-3

Brent Tylec hit a two-run single in the top of the 10th after a two-out error prolonged the inning to give unbeaten Niagara-Wheatfield (6-0) a 5-3 victory over Grand Island in a Niagara Frontier League baseball game Monday.

The host Vikings (3-2) had tied it at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh on a squeeze by Joel Moran that scored Mark Gardner. However, Falcons centerfielder Brian Shaffer gunned down the potential winning run at plate in bottom half of the eighth.

Nathan George, who had a two-run home run in first inning, pitched all 10 innings, allowing six hits and fanning nine for the win. Moran also went the distance for Grand Island, scattering eight hits and striking out five, while Justin Wallace added a homer.

Elsewhere in the NFL, Scot Wilcox went 4-for-4 to power Kenmore East (5-0) past Nichols, 13-7. Josh Rubin went five innings for the Bulldogs, while Mark Leyland had three hits for Nichols (2-3).

Simon Mazur scored winning run in fifth inning on Dave Ensminger's groundout as Tonawanda defeated North Tonawanda, 8-7.

Cornell Cup: Jason Mahn and Rich Sobon combined on a four-hitter as City Honors shutout South Park, 3-0. Sobon added a double, triple and two RBIs. . . . Jason Bailey's two-run single in the bottom of the sixth gave Lafayette a 4-3 win over Grover Cleveland. Frank Zorechak (2-0) pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief for the win. Grover's Isreal Gonzales tossed a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

ECIC I: Todd Hammond pitched his second straight one-hit shutout to lead Sweet Home (4-4, 2-2) past Lancaster, 6-0. Hammond helped his cause with a three-run single. . . . Senior righthander John Grimaldi scattered seven hits as Orchard Park beat Frontier, 9-4. Tony Panella went 3-for-3 with two RBIs for the Quakers.

ECIC II: Junior Sean Ptak (2-0) threw a three-hitter and fanned 12 as Depew blanked Lake Shore, 5-0. . . . Aaron Butler had four hits and two RBIs and pitcher Todd Snyder won his fourth game in five decisions as Clarence got by Pioneer, 9-7. . . . Terry Marchant had a two-run homer in Williamsville East's 10-7 win over West Seneca West.

ECIC III: Brian Malcolm and Chris Stoj had three RBIs each, lead Maryvale past Lackawanna, 10-2. . . . Jason Dudzic's two-out RBI double capped a five-run seventh inning and gave host Springville an 8-7 victory over Iroquois.

Winning pitcher Eric Jerge scattered seven hits and fanned nine.

ECIC IV: Junior Jeremy (1-0) hurled a complete-game four-hitter with 10 strikeouts as Holland stopped Cleveland Hill, 7-0.

Msgr. Martin Assn.: Paul Palumbo hit his second home run of the game and Nate Rewers added an RBI single as Canisius edged St. Francis, 4-3. Pitcher Matt Carver went the distance with a six-hitter.

CCIAC I: Senior Brad John pitched a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts as Gowanda beat Olean, 7-1. John and Jerard Capozzi had three hits each 3-4 for Gowanda. . . . Pitcher Chris Kubacki had a two-hitter and St. Bonaventure-bound Ryan LaMattina had two hits and three RBIs to lead Fredonia (5-2, 4-0) past Allegany, 10-2.

CCIAC II: Winning pitcher Kirk Krofka (1-0) had a two-run single then scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth as Frewsburg improved to 3-0 with a 4-2 victory. . . . Aaron Thurston walked with the bases loaded in the eighth to give Silver Creek a 9-8 victory over Maple Grove. Chris Pantano was 4-5 for the Black Knights (1-2).

CCIAC III: Cory Spague hit a grand slam and drove in five runs as Pine Valley outslugged Clymer, 19-12.
