EDITOR IN BANGLADESH FACES DEFAMATION CHARGES

Police said Saturday a Bangladesh newspaper editor, Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, had been released on bail two days after his arrest.

They said Chowdhury, editor of Banglabazar Patrika, a popular Bengali-language daily published in Dhaka, was arrested Thursday after allegedly defaming Morshed Khan, one of the country's top industrialists recently appointed a special envoy of Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia with foreign investment responsibilities.

A court hearing is set for May 20.
