The New Jersey Devils defeated the Buffalo Sabres, 2-1, Thursday at Memorial Auditorium as two of the stingiest goaltenders in the NHL continued to keep the best of seven Eastern Conference quarterfinal series a low-scoring affair.

Buffalo won the opener, 2-0, and the Devils took the second game, 2-1.

Martin Brodeur stopped 29 shots and New Jersey killed off five of six power plays for the victory. Game Four is scheduled Saturday night at Buffalo, and Game Five is Monday night at New Jersey.

For the third time in the series, the game turned on a defensive lapse. This time it was on Petr Svoboda's turnover.
