MEMORIAL DAY weekend traditionally is one of the most popular times for a barbecue, but sales of barbecue sauce in Buffalo during last year's holiday period were the fourth lowest of any major market in the country, the Wall Street Journal reported last week.

Only Green Bay, Wis., (where it probably was still snowing), New York City (where no one has any room to barbecue), and San Diego (where folks are too health conscious to eat the grease) had lower barbecue sauce sales.

Of course, the weather might have had something to do with Buffalo's skimpy barbecue sauce sales last year. After all, Memorial Day weekend 1992 was hardly a barbecuer's dream, with rain Saturday night and high temperatures of 50 degrees on Sunday and 56 on Monday.
