As the executive director of the SPCA serving Erie county, I read with dismay Ed Gillar's tragic tale of Skippy. The letter was brought to my attention several times by citizens who mistakenly believed Skippy was held at the Erie County SPCA. The SPCA serving Erie County is a private organization not affiliated with the City of Buffalo's animal shelter on Niagara Street.
The system of animal control in Buffalo has been the subject of much attention lately. City officials have been meeting regularly to address the problems of the city shelter on Niagara Street.
A citizen's group has formed, led by the children of School 45, to encourage the construction of a better facility and a system that better addresses what happens to unclaimed stray animals.
It is my hope that all those interested in the welfare of Buffalo's stray animals would contact their city representatives to encourage the creation of a system that addresses the problems now faced by Buffalo's Animal Control Department. A system can be created that does not lose a dog like Skippy. It is up to each one of us to determine that this happens.
