HEAD OF THE OAS MEETS WITH GUATEMALAN LEADER

The head of the Organization of American States flew to Guatemala Saturday for talks with President Jorge Serrano as pressure mounted on Serrano, who seized near dictatorial powers Tuesday, to quickly restore democratic rule.

"We are going to meet with the president, the authorities and the heads of all Guatemalan society to listen to their opinions," Joao Baena Soares told reporters.

Serrano is ruling by decree after shutting down Congress and the Supreme Court.
