DUNKIRK MAYOR WANTS LOWER SCHOOL TAX HIKE

Mayor Margaret Wuerstle said Wednesday the school district should lower the proposed tax increase of $2.51.

That rate was revealed last Thursday during a hearing on the tentative school budget.

Mayor Wuerstle said the city has been working very hard to cut spending and get taxes down and even had a tax cut for 1993. She noted that city employees settled for small salary increases. School district employees should do the same, she suggested.

The school district budget must be approved by June 30. The final tax rates are not expected to be known until August.
