A pro-life activist from the Town of Tonawanda said today his organization succeeded in presenting Democrat Bill Clinton with a dead fetus to protest the presidential candidate's pro-choice position.
The Rev. Robert Schenck, adviser to the pro-life group Operation Rescue, told reporters that a 17- to 19-week-old fetus was presented to the Arkansas governor after he left his hotel to go jogging.
But Clinton's communications director, George Stephan opoulos, denied Mr. Schenck's version of the incident.
He said a man asked for Clinton's autograph. Clinton started to sign his name on a newspaper the man held. But underneath the newspaper was a clear plastic container purportedly containing a fetus.
When Clinton saw it he pushed away the paper, which fell onto the pavement, but the man kept hold of the container, Stephanopoulos said.
pa2 Clinton then got into his car without a word and sped off, a television producer at the scene said.
Meanwhile, four members of Operation Rescue locked themselves inside a midtown abortion clinic today as more than 1,000 abortion-rights advocates challenged abortion foes at two city clinics.
Two men and two women were arrested at the Metropolitan Women's Center on East 55th Street at 9:45 a.m. after they locked themselves in a treatment room, sat on the floor and refused to leave, police said.
