Services for Ernest M. Austin, 96, postmaster of Cowlesville from 1920 to 1940, will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Charles Meyer Funeral Home, 13228 Broadway, Alden. Burial will be in Cowlesville Cemetery.
Austin, a lifelong resident of Cowlesville, died Sunday (Dec. 30, 1990) in his home after a long illness.
He served in the Army in World War I and in the 1920s and 1930s co-owned the Austin-North General Store located for many years next to Cowlesville Post Office on Clinton Street.
Austin attended elementary school in Cowlesville and, as a young man, was involved in community theater. He also played on the Cowlesville baseball team and enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a member of Cowlesville Baptist Church.
His wife of 58 years, the former Theresa Urf, died in 1979.
