Anthony Ognibene, 73, a Buffalo restaurateur known as "Yogi" to almost four decades of customers, died Monday (Dec. 31, 1990) in Millard Fillmore Hospital after a short illness.
After brief careers as a construction worker and a bartender, Ognibene opened the first of his four restaurants, Yogi's Hot Dog Stand on Perry Street, in 1948.
That gave way to Yogi's Restaurant at Niagara and Carolina streets in 1950, Yogi's Tavern on West Ferry Street and finally Sebastian's Restaurant on Main Street near Virginia Street in 1968.
Ognibene retired in 1985 after 37 years in the business. A Buffalo native, Ognibene served in the Army during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, the former Theresa Mazzone; two daughters, Jackie Tomasello and Jill Kennedy, and three grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Friday in Annunciation Catholic Church on Lafayette Avenue at Grant Street. Prayers will be said at 8:45 in the Joseph Spano and Sons Funeral Home, 473 Niagara St. Burial will in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cheektowaga.
