Take a 6-by-6-by-10-foot block of snow, add water, pack it down a little here, pile it up a little there, and what do you have? A shoe, a castle or anything else you can dream up for the 1991 New York State Snow Sculpting Competition.
From Jan. 31 to Feb. 3, 30 teams of three snow sculptors will be creating icy wonders on the campus of the Jefferson Community College in Watertown. The contest is the closing event in Watertown's annual Snowtown USA festival, which begins Jan. 25 and also includes ice skating, snowmobile races, concerts and hockey games.
Entries close Jan. 24 for the snow sculpture contest. Applications and information about the contest and the winter festival are available from Snowtown USA, 230 Franklin St., Watertown, N.Y. 13601, or call (315) 788-SNOW.
