Priestlay helps Team Canada win at Spengler

DAVOS, Switzerland -- Former Buffalo Sabre Ken Priestlay scored twice in the first period to lead Team Canada to a 3-1 victory over Czechoslovakia league leader Dukla Jihlava at the Spengler Cup hockey tournament.

Priestlay refused to report to the Sabres at the beginning of the season and decided to play instead for Team Canada. He opened the scoring at 4:50 of the first period and added another goal at 10:55 when he split the defense to beat goaltender Radek Toth from close range.

The Czechoslovaks dominated the second period and cut the lead to 2-1 when Libor Dolana finished off a pattern play.

Ex-Tyson trainer sentenced to three years

GUILDERLAND -- Kevin Rooney, former trainer of heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson, was fined $500 and sentenced to three years' probation after pleading guilty to drunken driving, court officials said.

Rooney, 34, of Catskill, was arrested by Guilderland police, west of Albany, in September. He was sentenced by Justice Steven Simon in Guilderland Town Court Dec. 20.

Rooney, whom Tyson fired over public comments made about Tyson's marriage to actress Robin Givens, was arrested on drunken driving and resisting arrest charges after being involved in a minor accident in New York city in December 1988.

Walsh bowls second perfect game

Jeff Walsh, an 18-year-old Kenmore East right-hander, rolled a 300 game -- his second in less than two months -- in the Youth Bowlers Tour at Ide's Lanes in Ithaca.

Walsh, who fired a 300 Nov. 10 in Thruway Lanes' Teen Classic, defeated Rochester's Brian Kretchner, 300-216, in his opening match on the Tour, the state's top-ranked junior traveling classic league.

"The first 11 strikes were pocket hits, then I tripped the 4-7-10 on a high hit on the 12th ball," said Walsh, who averages 195.
