A Jefferson Avenue man was charged with burglary about 1 a.m. today after Kensington Station police officers saw him allegedly climbing out of a drugstore through a broken window.

Rodney L. Smith, 25, of 1552 Jefferson was charged with third-degree burglary, fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, resisting arrest and second-degree criminal mischief, police said.

The suspect was arrested at 12:55 a.m. outside Fay's Drug store at 230 Holden St., minutes after a burglar alarm sounded, police said.

Police said the suspect ran as soon as Officers William Delano and Karen Czekalski spotted him climbing out of the drug store window as he carried a VCR and 17 cartons of cigarettes.

The suspect, police said, dropped the merchandise and ran, but police caught him after a short chase.
