Former King Michael of Romania flew back to Switzerland Wednesday after being expelled from his homeland, saying the authorities there were afraid of everything.

Romania expelled its former king Wednesday less than 12 hours after he ended 43 years exile to spend Christmas in his homeland and visit the graves of his ancestors.

Michael, 69, his wife Ana and one of their daughters, flew Wednesday to Geneva from Bucharest, via Zurich.

Asked if the Romanian authorities were afraid of his presence, he said in Switzerland: "The thing is they don't seem to be very settled, because they seem to be frightened of everything that happens."
