NOVEMBER RATES AS BRIGHT SPOT ON WEATHER ROLLS

November turned out dry, mild and bright this year, defying the stereotype of early Buffalo winters.

Temperatures averaged three degrees above normal, the warmest in more than a decade, and eight days had temperatures of at least 60 degrees.

Beyond that, according to meteorologist Stephen F. McLaughlin, the month had an inch less precipitation than normal, and less than three-quarters of an inch of snow -- making this the third November of the last four to have less than an inch of snow.

There was sunshine during 45 percent of the daylight hours, 16 percent above normal and the most since 1958.

Winds were brisk, with gusts of more than 50 mph on the Nov. 6 and 11 as Indian summer gave way to damp and chilly weather and the season of November gales.

"Naturally, Buffalo's only hour of snow all month was captured on national TV, as it occurred during the Phoenix-Bills game," McLaughlin noted.
